This report summarizes a re-investigation into results of a study completed between 1966 through 1973. While a reduction in cholesterol was achieved by substituting saturated fats with omega-6 oils, the risk of death was 17% higher! Several implications can be derived from this: that cholesterol may not be the best marker for cardiovascular disease and that corn and safflower oils are NOT healthy despite marketing efforts. Include nuts and fatty fish in your diet. Freshly ground flax seed is also good, but AVOID flax seed OIL as it quickly oxidizes and goes rancid. Cod liver oil is an excellent source of omega-3’s–two brands that are good are Carlson and Nordic Naturals.
