Specifically in this study, men being treated for prostate cancer and supplemented calcium and Vit. D were found to have a greater risk of cardiovascular disease and even more aggressive prostate cancer. These supplements had been recommended due to the increased risk of osteoporosis in men being treated with hormone therapies.
It has already been shown that calcium supplementation may increase cardiovascular risk factors-however, a diet rich in calcium foods doesn’t seem to increase this risk. It is suspected that supplements which contain calcium AND magnesium and other minerals would not increase heart disease.
With respect to the increased risk of aggressive prostate cancer, it seems clear to avoid supplementation of calcium and Vit. D while under hormonal treatment of prostate cancer. I will endeavor to keep you posted.
