Chronic Fatigue and Low Thyroid

Research is bearing out my clinical observations of an association between Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) and lower thyroid hormone levels. Most allopathic physicians (MD’s, DO’s, etc.) tend to monitor thyroid function with only a TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) which is a pituitary hormone, NOT a thyroid hormone. By measuring T4 and T3 (actual thyroid hormones) in addition to the TSH, a better picture of thyroid function can be ascertained. In addition, reverse T3 (a hormone that can block the thyroid receptors causing a “peripheral” hypothyroid state) can also be very helpful to assess. Multiple treatment options can be considered based upon these results and help reduce the pain and fatigue of CFS.
