Acetaminophen Maybe Linked to Childhood Asthma

December 20th, 2011

There is new evidence suggesting that acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) may be linked to childhood asthma. The increase in childhood asthma rates in the 1980’s prompted Dr. McBride to research possible causes.  The onset seems to be related to the period of time when doctors learned of the link between Reyes syndrome and aspirin; they began recommending acetaminophen instead.  In addition, researchers have found that “even a single dose of acetaminophen can reduce the body’s levels of glutathione, an enzyme that helps repair oxidative damage that can drive inflammation in the airways” (that is, asthma).

This evidence is compelling–please avoid the use of both aspirin and acetaminophen for childhood fevers.  Contact us for natural treatment options for childhood fevers.

Safe Use of Neti Pot Nasal Lavage

December 20th, 2011

There are now two cases of death attributed to using tap water for neti pot solutions.  The deaths are due to an amoeba present in tap water in Louisiana.  This amoeba is deemed to be safe to consume but not safe for rinsing nasal passages.  Please use only filtered or bottled water for nasal irrigation and do NOT use tap water.  I would also recommend drinking only filtered or bottled water and would argue that amoeba in drinking water isn’t optimal.  You may read the recent article here.

Controversy over Vit. E and Selenium for Prostate Cancer prevention

December 15th, 2011

Dr. Ingrid Pinchot has published a wonderful article summarizing how Vitamin E (as gamma-tocopherol) can be protective against prostate cancer.  She also goes on to report the flaws of the recent study which denies the benefits of selenium and Vitamin E (for example, the research used synthetic alpha-tocopherol despite research which had previously shown significant protective benefits of  gamma-tocopherol, and the “results” included analyzing participants who had been off the supplements for up to 3 years!).  The article may be read by clicking here.
